We’re proud to announce a tremendous milestone in our Beads for Wildlife campaign, passing 125,000 beaded products now sold across our two zoos.
Every beaded ornament, accessory, and piece of jewellery has been handcrafted by women in Northern Kenya, providing them with a sustainable source of income. The products are made from Czech glass beads, sustainable leather, recycled brass, and natural fibres, ensuring products are both high-quality and environmentally friendly. These striking pieces are traditionally made and worn by local women, with every piece telling their stories through the colour palettes and patterns chosen.
Kenya is home some of Africa’s most iconic species, including Lions, Elephants, Giraffe, and Rhinos. Living alongside these emblematic species isn’t always easy. Severe drought has impacted Northern Kenya, where most communities rely on small-scale agriculture and livestock, increasing pressures on people and wildlife alike.
This program provides a wildlife-friendly employment for women in nine indigenous communities, allowing them to earn an income while retaining traditional, semi-nomadic lifestyles. Over 1200 women now earn an income as beaders. These women are able to grow and develop, with many receiving training in business skills, product development, and adult literacy classes.
The benefits of the program also extend to the women’s families and local communities. More than 3500 children are now able to attend school rather than herding livestock. The local communities benefit from additional revenue to support infrastructure and services such as clean water.
Every Beads for Wildlife sale also contributes to the Northern Rangelands Trust, a network of community conservancies that protect landscapes and threatened species through local grassroots efforts. Taronga has a longstanding partnership with the Northern Rangelands Trust, which includes aiding efforts to reduce poaching and human-wildlife conflict, providing fencing for farmland, and supporting local rangers.
“I am really proud that our messaging at the zoo is really resonating with our guests and inspiring them to support communities and animals in Africa,” Renae Moss, Senior Ungulates Keeper.
For everyone who has purchased a Beads for Wildlife souvenir, thank you for helping transform the lives of these women and their communities whilst protecting Kenya’s wildlife. You can be a part of this transformation and support Kenya’s people and wildlife by purchasing a piece of striking jewellery or hand-made gift at either Taronga’s retail store or online shop.
