Taronga Western Plains Zoo is delighted to be a finalist in two categories in the 2021 NSW Tourism Awards – Major Tourist Attraction and Unique Accommodation (Zoofari Lodge).

“A trip to the Zoo or an overnight stay at Zoofari Lodge are very special experiences that provide lasting holiday memories for families, so we are thrilled to be announced as a NSW Tourism Award finalist once again,” said Taronga Western Plains Zoo Director, Steve Hinks.

 “Being named a finalist after the challenges and triumphs of 2020-21 is a real testament to our team and their resilience and dedication through drought, bushfires, a mouse plague and a pandemic.”

During the qualifying period Taronga Western Plains Zoo opened its new Waterhole precinct and completed the redevelopment of the African Wild Dog precinct at the start of the circuit. The Zoo welcomed numerous new animal arrivals, which saw guests flocking to the popular family destination following the first Covid-19 lockdown period.

“Over the past financial year, both the Zoo and our accommodation recorded one of the best visitation years since the Zoo opened in 1977, thanks to a regional tourism boom on the back of last year’s lockdown period,” said Steve.

Zoofari Lodge saw its occupancy level at over 97% during the last financial year, and with strong forward bookings it remains the must-do overnight experience at Taronga Western Plains Zoo.

Zoofari Lodge has an award-winning history having previously won a number of tourism awards including Best Unique Accommodation at the Australian Tourism Awards. So being named a finalist in the NSW Tourism Awards is another accolade for this popular overnight experience.

“The increase in regional tourism has greatly benefited the local economy whilst securing Dubbo as the number one family destination in New South Wales,” said Steve.

The NSW Tourism Awards winners will be announced at a gala event in Sydney on 3 February 2022.
